At BHP Stainless in Wollongong, a highly unionised plant employing 300 people which produced finished stainless steel strip and sheet for a variety of uses. Triton introduced a team-based operation between 1990 and 1996. This resulted in a dramatic 50% reduction in the conversion costs of their raw material from $1623 to $807 per tonne and a saving of $25m per annum. The change began with an across the board introduction of Station Control, a significant culture shift towards shop floor control and accountability. To ensure that the vision was put into action, significant changes in operational management and supervisory personnel were instituted. As the culture took root, a major improvement initiative called People Power was put into place. A series of improvement projects driven by shop floor teams, facilitated by Triton, produced the remarkable improvements.
